Boy seriously injured after loose trailer smashes into car

The 10-year-old boy and the 65-year-old driver of the car were airlifted to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary following the crash.

A ten-year-old boy has been seriously injured after a car was apparently struck by a detached trailer.

The boy and the 65-year-old driver of the car were airlifted to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary following the crash around a mile north of Turriff.

The incident involving a Kia Sedona people carrier and a tractor towing the trailer happened at around 8.50am on Tuesday on the A947 Turriff to Banff road.

Roads policing Inspector Mike McDonald said: "The trailer appears to have become detached from the tractor and collided with the Kia.

"Our enquiries are continuing and local diversions are in place while a full accident investigation takes place."

The two other passengers in the Kia - 50-year-old woman and another child - were treated on the scene but their injuries are not thought to be serious. The tractor driver was uninjured.

The Kia was driving south on the A947, while the tractor was travelling north.

Twinsburg police seek witnesses in fatal hit-skip accident

TWINSBURG -- The Twinsburg police department is seeking the public's assistance to help solve a fatal hit-skip traffic accident that occurred at 10:26 p.m. Sept. 15 on Interstate 480, just east of state Route 91.

A vehicle, possibly a pick-up truck, pulling a trailer, was traveling east on I-480 when the trailer came loose from the vehicle and struck a car before crossing the median, ending up in the westbound lanes.

A 2004 Harley-Davidson motorcycle driven by Michael K. Hull, 48, of Ravenna, struck the trailer.

Hull was ejected off the motorcycle and landed in the westbound lanes, where he was struck by two other vehicles.

The vehicle pulling the trailer continued eastbound on I-480 without stopping. The trailer was stolen from a Twinsburg business several hours earlier.

Hull was flown by Medevac to Akron City Hospital with life-threatening injuries where he died Sept. 30.

The Twinsburg Police Department is requesting anyone who witnessed the accident or has information to please contact the Twinsburg PD at (330) 425-1234.

WP. Michael K. Hull, 48 years of age, a lifetime resident of the Shalersville-Ravenna areas, passed away Wednesday, September 30, 2009 at Akron City Hospital. Michael was born on October 3, 1960 in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania the son of John W. and Joyce (King) Hull. Michael attended Crestwood Schools, following which he joined the U.S. Marines. After serving his country, he was employed for 30 years as a machinist at Swagelok in Solon, Ohio. Michael was a motorcycle enthusiast who loved riding his Harley. Michael is survived by his son, Andrew Hull, daughter, Amanda Hull and parents, John and Joyce Hull all of Shalersville, his brother, Chuck Hull of Brimfield, sister, Renee Anderson of Southern Pines, North Carolina, grandfather, Charles Hull of Carmichaels, Pennsylvania and granddaughter, Haley. Funeral services will be Sunday, October 4, 2009 at the Green Family Funeral Home & Crematory Service in Mantua at 3:00 P.M. with Pastor Nick Bardo officiating. Visitation will be Sunday from 1:00 P.M.-3:00 P.M at the funeral home. Cremation will follow. A Britt man was killed Saturday when his vehicle was struck by a trailer that came loose from a pickup and crossed the center line in western Hancock County.

Daniel Stites, 36, was driving east on Highway 18 at 3:45 p.m. when his SUV was struck head-on by a small single-axle trailer, which had become unhooked from a westbound pickup driven by Christopher Ludwig, 20, Corwith, according to a report from the Iowa State Patrol.

The trailer did not have safety chains.

The occupants of the pickup were uninjured.

The accident remains under investigation.

The Iowa State Patrol was assisted by the Hancock and Kossuth County Sheriff's Department.

St. Paris woman still in critical condition after accident

Jackson TWP. — A Jackson Twp. woman is still listed in critical condition after a runaway trailer struck her as she stood by her mailbox late last week.

Paula S. Lowry, 46, was listed in critical condition at Miami Valley Hospital on Tuesday, Sept. 29, according to hospital officials.

According to information from the Marysville Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Lowry was standing by her mailbox on Wolcott Road near St. Paris when a flat bed trailer ran over her.

A 13-year old Oregon boy lost his life Wednesday when the van his grandfather was driving crashed into a box truck parked on the right shoulder of the road.

Shortly after 2 p.m., Phil L. Kelly, 68, of Myrtle Point, Oregon, was driving a 2005 GMC U-Haul truck, towing a loaded vehicle trailer, northbound on the I-5. In the cab with him was his grandson, Kristopher R. Kelly, 13.

California Highway Patrol Officer John Lutz said that witnesses estimate the U-Haul truck was traveling at approximately 65 to 70 MPH when it drifted on to the right shoulder, hitting the box truck and spinning it 180 degrees before coming to rest against the guard rail.

The elder Kelly was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. Kristopher Kelly, who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The box truck and another vehicle had been involved in an earlier property damage collision and the drivers of those vehicles were exchanging information immediately prior to the fatal crash.

Traffic on the northbound I-5 was slowed for several hours as crews worked to clean up cargo from the trucks and attend to the victims.

Twinsburg — Twinsburg police, along with the Summit County Medical Examiner’s office, are investigating the death of a Ravenna man after an accident in Twinsburg last month.
Michael Hull, 48, died Sept. 30 apparently due to injuries from a motorcycle incident on Interstate 480 in Twinsburg Sept. 15.

Twinsburg Police Lt. Michael Nakata said Hull was thrown from his motorcycle while traveling westbound on I-480 at about 10:26 p.m. after striking a homemade trailer that had separated from the vehicle that was towing it.

Hull was flown to Akron City Hospital and died from multiple injuries at 3:08 p.m. Sept. 30.
Nakata said the vehicle hauling the trailer kept traveling westbound and has not been identified or found. The trailer has been towed.

“It is unknown if the driver realized what happened,” he said.
Gary Guenther, investigator supervisor for the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office, said a ruling has not yet been made on Hull’s death.

“We will have to obtain medical records from the hospital as well as police reports,” Guenther said. “The time it takes to make a ruling will depend on how quickly we can obtain those.”

ST. CLAIRSVILLE, OHIO -- The man seriously injured in a rollover crash on Interstate 70 in Belmont County yesterday is an Ohio Highway Patrolman from Columbus.

According to OHP, 30-year-old Martin Schmalzried is recovering at a local hospital after suffering several broken bones and lacerations.

OHP said two witnesses of the crash called last night to report that a second vehicle hauling a U-Haul trailer was involved and responsible for the crash.

Schmalzreid was eastbound on I-70 near Exit 213 when he lost control of his car.

After a dramatic roll-over, he ended up trapped in the car, upside-down, and on the wrong side of the highway, blocking all westbound traffic.
